Description
Almond 402 is a New Zealand nursery selection prized for a stunning, long-flowering blossom display followed by prolific crops of large, soft-shelled almonds with a pleasant sweet flavour. Nuts ripen early, around April, and shell easily thanks to the thin shell. It is partially self-fertile and will crop alone, but yields are heavier with a companion almond nearby, and its extended flowering makes it a good pollinator for other varieties. The vigorous deciduous tree reaches about 5 m and needs a sunny position sheltered from harsh wind, adequate winter chilling, and well-drained soil that never waterlogs in winter. Choose the right site and it is a reliable, heavy-cropping home-orchard almond.
