Description
‘Akane’ is a apple cultivar of Malus domestica selected for its named fruit qualities and orchard performance. An older variety of apple with small red juicy apples that are perfect for eating, stewing or drying. The tree crops well with the fruit ripening around Mid season. Available in New Zealand. External cultivar references describe ‘Akane’ as follows: One of the best early-season apples, better known in the USA than Europe, but would appeal to European tastes too.

Dessert/fresh eating use noted. Jonathan x Worcester Pearmain. Originated in Japan; introduced 1937; developed by Morioka Experimental Station. Disease resistance: Good. The apples hold well on the tree even when ripe. Akane is an early-season Japanese apple — a cross between Worcester Pearmain and Jonathan developed at the Morioka Experimental Station in Japan in the 1930s.
