Description
Malus 'Charlottae' (sweet crabapple, Malus coronaria type) is a charming American flowering crab grown for its beautiful double blooms and sweet perfume. Flesh-pink buds open to large, double, pale shell-pink flowers in late spring to early summer — strongly and sweetly fragrant, drawing bees from everywhere — followed by unusually large dark-green fruits for a crabapple that extend the season. The foliage turns attractive shades of orange in autumn on an upright, spreading small tree maturing around 4 m tall by 2 m wide. Hardy enough to grow almost anywhere, tolerant of most soils, and happy in full sun, it makes a lovely specimen for smaller gardens, cottage planting and spring fragrance near paths and patios. Deciduous, easy and trouble-free; plant it where the violet-scented blossom can be enjoyed up close.
