Description

Malus 'Ellerslie' is a gorgeous New Zealand weeping crabapple (PVR) that delivers colour from spring to midwinter on a compact umbrella frame. Masses of dark-red buds open to reveal soft crimson blossoms in spring, set against foliage in a soft shade of maroon — a rich, moody combination few small trees can match. These are followed by small red fruits that hold on the branches well into winter, feeding birds and brightening grey days. At around 2 m tall by 1.5 m wide it fits courtyards, small gardens, large containers and feature positions near entries where the blossom and fruit can be seen up close. Easy to grow in a sunny spot in most soils, deciduous and low-maintenance; winter-prune to maintain the weeping head and remove any crossing growth. A choice PVR weeper with genuine four-season appeal.
