Description

Makrut lime (Citrus hystrix, sold as Lime Makrut, previously Lime Kaffir) is the Thai-cuisine lime grown for its highly fragrant double-lobed leaves, stocked by Southern Woods ($48, 4.7L), Waimea Nurseries (LIME Kaffir), Wairere and The Plant Company. Southern Woods describes knobby bumpy fruit with intense aroma, leaves used in Thai and Southeast Asian cooking, ripening March-September on a 2 m evergreen tree for warm frost-free positions. The makrut species has zero cultivars in the catalog, so this is the entry that puts kaffir/makrut where NZ shoppers actually find it.
