Aurea is a metrosideros excelsa cultivar. A native, evergreen tree that thrives in coastal locations. Rarely seen as it produce a mass of fluffy yellow flowers from early to midsummer.

aka Pohutukawa A beautiful low growing shrub that has lime green foliage that grows in a compact habit. In summer it can be smothered in small red flowers. excelsa

aka Pohutukawa or NZ Christmas Tree Native. Who doesn't love the Pohutukawa AKA The NZ Christmas Tree. Attractive leathery blue-grey foliage and unique yet beautiful crimson tufted blooms that appear in summer. Tolerant of harsh conditions and poor soil but doesn't like frost. Evergreen. This iconic NZ tree is seen at its best along the Thames-Coromandel Coast. It is worth taking a road trip in December-January just to see these coastal beauties in full flower. Fiji

aka Pohutukawa Native. A hardy big shrub or small tree that has glossy dark green foliage with deep burgundy new growth. Flowering late Spring into Summer with blooms of crimson pincushion flowers that are made up of fluffy stamens. Great for hedging or screening and tolerant of coastal conditions. Evergreen. Flower colour: Red. Leaves: Evergreen, Green.

Fire Mountain

Fire Mountain is a metrosideros excelsa cultivar. Striking heads of orange-scarlet flowers in early summer. It has a round spreading habit and glossy green foliage.

Maori Princess

aka Pohutukawa Native. An excellent form of NZ's 'Christmas Tree' that grows with a clean straight trunk and has few aerial roots, making it highly suitable for street planting or the home garden. Leathery green leaves and, of course, beautiful red blooms in summer. Very tolerant of coastal conditions but not harsh frost. Did you know that the name 'Pohutukawa' means 'drenched with spray'? Referring of course to the many beautiful trees growing in precarious positions on NZ's coastline. Flower colour: Red. Habit: Tree Multi Branched. Leaves: Evergreen, Green.

Maungapiko

An erect variety with shiny, pointed, dark green foliage. This looks stunning in the hot months of Summer with beautiful red-scarlet flowers en-mass. An excellent coastal tree as tolerant of wind and salt spray. Evergreen. Frost tender. A cross between Southern Rata and Pohutukawa that incorporates the frost tolerance of the Rata with the large profuse flowers of the Pohutukawa. Flower colour: Red. Habit: Tree Multi Branched. Mistral

aka Pohutukawa Native. An unusual Rata - Pohutukawa cross discovered on Great Barrier Island. Nice dark green foliage and scarlet red flowers in summer. Fairly compact habit. Plant in the sun in well drained soil and protect from harsh frost. Evergreen. Flower colour: Red. Habit: Tree Multi Branched. Leaves: Evergreen, Green.

Perforata

aka White Rata Vine Metrosideros perforata is a climber growing up to 15m high but will grow as a bushy shrub if it has nothing to climb. Usually found flowering at the top of trees in our native bush. In mid summer it has masses of white flowers from white buds. Coastal hardy. Evergreen. Flower colour: White. Habit: Climber. Scarlet Pimpernel

aka Pohutukawa Smaller growing upright tree with dark green leaves and deep scarlet flowers from early summer. Ideal for coastal situations in full sun and well drained soil. Drought and wind tolerant. Can be grown as a tree or screening plant. Bred in Taranaki. Evergreen Flower colour: Red. Habit: Tree Multi Branched.

Tahiti

aka Dwarf Tahitian Pohutukawa A wonderful little compact shrub with attractive silver-green foliage. Bright red 'pohutukawa' flowers appear throughout the year and peak in the winter months just when the garden needs a little cheering up. Tolerant of hot dry conditions, including coastal, but does not like harsh frost. Evergreen Flower colour: Red. Habit: Shrub. Leaves: Evergreen, Light.

Velvet Sky

aka Pohutukawa New Release. It has amazing inky blue stems and beautiful blue velvet foliage, it almost appears as though this Metrosideros has been dyed blue! It produces stunning red flowers that contrast beautifully with its blue foliage, and it will make a real statement as a hedging plant. Vibrance

Wee Willie Winkie

Protected from comercial propagation by Plant Variety Rights. Found during a comfort stop in the Waioeke Gorge as a variation on the green rata. Small rich cream and green leaves and very compact habit. White flowers but not a feature. Does excellently in pots. Frost tender. Can be trained to be a climber Will climb up a wall, ponga or bank if placed against it but otherwise acts as a shrub. Flower colour: White. Habit: Groundcover. Leaves: Evergreen, Variegated.
