Chanticleer

Pyrus calleryana Chanticleer is the upright slender callery pear favoured for NZ urban planting, sold by The Plant Company: a strong central leader with evenly spaced ascending branches reaching 8-12 m by 4-5 m, clouds of pure white spring blossom, glossy green summer foliage and brilliant red-orange autumn colour. Disease-resistant, tolerant of varied soils and urban pollution, drought-tolerant once established and needing only light late-winter pruning. Ideal as a feature, screening or avenue tree for driveways and compact gardens.

Winter Glow

Pyrus calleryana Winter Glow is an ornamental screening pear sold in NZ by The Plant Company, valued for holding glossy foliage into late winter with only a brief dormancy. Upright conical form (about 10 x 5 m) carries pink-eyed white spring blossom, dense green summer shade and late-autumn reds, oranges and bronzes, with decorative fruit lingering into the cold months. Adaptable to most NZ soils and exposed or sheltered sites, wind-tolerant once established; prune lightly only. Excellent for avenues, driveways and evergreen-style screening in milder districts.
